In February 2002, given the increasing evidence of the benefit of ACE inhibitors or angiotensinreceptor blockers in patients with diabetes mellitus and renal disease, the investigators were adviced to substitute open-label ACE inhibitors for the masked study treatment in patients with diabetes and either overt proteinuria or hypertension and microalbuminuria.
